Best New Books On My Bookshelf

I’m always on the lookout for irresistable activities to lure my boys away from the Xbox 360. These two books fit the bill nicely.

Howtoons by Saul Griffith, Nick Dragotta, and Joost Bonsen is a building guide for “inventions” that is part comic book and part science experiment.   Howtoons are cartoons that teach 8– to 15–year–old readers “how to” build, and create using easily accessible materials in a full-color cartoon format incorporating real life science and engineering principles. Fifteen practical, build–it–yourself projects are weaved into a storyline featuring a brother and sister pair who find themselves bored during summer break. With the narrators’ help and clear step–by–step instructions,  the reader will learn how to set up a workshop, create a marshmallow shooting gun,  launch a pressure–powered rocket, and more.

Forbidden Lego by Ulaik Pilegaard and Mike Dooley is filled with guidance on how to create creations such as a paper plane launcher and a ping pong ball cannon.
